TGJ 2A/G - USING LINES IN PHOTOGRAPHY

Lines in photographs can :
- Imply structure, order, and symmetry. They can:
- Give a sense of direction to the viewer and lead us to look
at things a certain way!
- Provide structure to man-made materials (lines in a building)
- Evoke emotional responses
- long lineups = irritation; - broken glass/jagged lines = fear
- lightning = power; - Horizontal lines = Peace, stability, curiosity
- Vertical lines = Strength and pride
- Diagonal lines = Motion and speed
- Help us develop an appreciation of nature (curved lines in nature)

Assignment :
In groups of 1 or 2 , you will produce 6 of your best quality photographs of different examples of lines.
- Half of these photos will be examples of lines in nature, the other half will
be examples of lines that occur in man-made objects

- Don't be afraid to experiment with closeups and/or different
angles/perspectives. Then you can select the pictures that "work" best.

- Your selections will be printed on 3 X 5 (i.e.; small) sheets. Your group will
then mount your work in a presentation format that looks as professional as
possible. (Examples of presentation formats will be shown in class)

Submit your work with a 1-page analysis of both photographs. Each student is
responsible for their own analysis! Explain:
a)Why you chose the subject;
b) What messages you were trying to communicate to the viewers by
using lines in your work? (see above for guidelines on interpretation)
c) What you learned in the overall process;
d) What you'd do differently next time.

Your analysis should be word-processed. Late assignments will be docked marks.
Assessment will be based on: a) Photographs' overall technical quality;
b) Overall professional quality of presentation c)Skill and creativity in communicating abstract concepts; d) Clarity and depth of thought in the written analysis
