TGJ 3A Photographic Portfolio

Now that you have mastered the technical aspects of photography you are ready to explore this fascinating media in more depth, sophistication and expertise. The photography component of the 3A Communications course has two parts:

Part A (to be completed prior to moving on to part B)
Explore the photographic medium by completing 6 of the following:
-a formal head & shoulders portrait
-a 3/4 portrait
-a full size portrait
-dramatically lit studio still life
-a panoramic nature shot
-a close up nature shot
-movement using panning
-movement using slow shutter speed
-strong use of line
-strong use of texture
-beauty of machinery
-expressive hands
-elevate the commmonplace

Part B
Select either one of the subjects below or one of your own ideas. Submit a one page written proposal which outlines the scope of the project. Include your ideas for a finished product, locations, materials, subjects, projected difficulties and ideas for presentation. This portfolio must include at least 6 good quality prints.

A Story
Photographically illustrate a story. This may be an original story, a well known story, a fable, myth, etc.

A Sequence
Create a portfolio that sequences movement through time. This may be a short period of time or you may choose to "stage" longer periods such as months or years.

The Drama of Light and Dark
Use lighting to show forms, express emotion and mood, create drama and add interest. This may be illustrated using similar subjects or you may choose all different types of subjects.

Human Emotions
Portray the vastness of human emotions through the photographci medium. This may include "decisive moment" shots, "staged" shots or a combination of both.


Landscapes: Large and Small
Explore landscape in both "zoom out" and "zoom in " modes. Use panoramic shots to express the vastness of our northern Ontario landscape and also examine the beauty of the tiny things we too often ignore.

The Portrait
Do a portrait study of one person or a specific group of individuals. For example ..... children, athletes, seniors, co-workers, etc.

Children
Do a study of a child or a number of children. Explore their world from their point of view. Try to capture the wide range of emotions a child expresses throughout the day.

Generations
Examine the generations within one family. Try to capture the similarities and differences found within a family unit.

People at Work
Do a study of people in their workplaces, how they fill their responsibilities and how they interact with one another.

Movement and Motion
Do a series of photographs that illustrate the principle of movement . This could be one or many subjects.

The Urban Landscape
Examine the urban landscape of Kenora. In particular, seek out styles, textures, interesting points of view.

Colour
Explore the element of colour by hand tinting your photographs using a variety of different media.
