TGJ3A MUSIC VIDEO

Music videos are an artform designed to enhance the creative expression of music and lyrics. They sometimes simply show the artists (musicians) at their craft, sometimes actors play roles in the storytelling and sometimes the visuals simply communicate tone, attitude or mood. Either way, a music video should engage the viewer, draw them into and through the musical storytelling

STRATEGIES AND TECHNIQUES

1. Camera movements/shots
-establishing shots, following the action/handheld camera
-pan left/right, tilt up/down
-activity close up, dolly shot
-movement within a still shot
2. Actors actions and expressions
-body language communicates volumes
-facial expressions, emotions
-reactions to situations
3. Use lyrics for a basis
-connect the lyrics with images that are meaningful either directly, or
symbolically
-access photographs that help tell the story
4. Setting the mood
-use sets, props, costumes, make up, interesting locations and times of day,
lighting, special digital effects
-videotape photographic images
5. Editing and pacing
-make sure editing connects with what is being communicated. (i.e. a gentle
sweet love song would not have jumpy cuts and severe camera angles)
-use rhythm, beat and lyrics to help you decide when to "cut" from one scene to
the other.
