Graphic Design Project (TGJ 2A/G)

This project has four major components:
  • 20 marks - corporate identity (logo)
  • 10 marks - business card
  • 10 marks - letterhead and envelope
  • 10 marks - presentation to client

Carefully consider the real or fictional business or organization you wish to design for. Iy is very important to consider the type of image or attitude you wish to convey while keeping in mind the characteristics of good design.

You are expected to work through the design process using a variety of resources. I.E.:

  • doodle and draw thumbnails
  • use the light table to experiment with layout
  • confer with the owner, your instructor and other students
  • look through books and magazines for ideas
  • experiment with the computer program(s)
  • assess and evaluate after each step

Observation of these design processes will bea an important part of your on-going evaluation. The steps you take from problem to solution are the key components of a successful design.

1. LOGO: The logo is the first and most important design component of this project. You will determine the identity of the business or organization through your design therefore, it is extremely important that the mood, theme or attitude that you create is appropriate to what the client desires. The logo will set the tone for the remaining parts of the project. Tehy may be designed by computer, by hand or a combination of both.

2. BUSINESS CARD: The business card must be standard size, either vertical or horizontal (3.5" X 2") (9cm. X 5.1cm.). It must include the logo and other appropriate information such as address and phone/fax numbers.

3. LETTERHEAD AND ENVELOPE: The letterhead (on 8.5" X 11" paper) and envelope (9.5" X 4.25") must contain the logo and co-ordinate with its design. All the appropriate information such as address and phone/fax numbers must be included. Specialty papers are available at downtown retail outlets should you wish to use these for your presentation.

4. PRESENTATION TO CLIENT: The designs must be presented, as a body of work, on a single sheet of display board, presented as you would if you were shwoing a real client. Neatness and accuracy are extremely important in the presentation of a formal and professional looking design project.

ANALYSIS

Use complete sentences in narrative (not point form!!)

1. Describe the process involved in coming up with your logo. a) What were some of the "trials and errors" that you experienced? b) What were you trying to communicate with your logo?

2. Describe, in detail, each and every design element/principle that you used, and how you used each one in your overall presentation.

3. Describe all of the challenges that you encountered (except those involing question 1), and how you overcame them.

4. Has this been a good learning experience for you? Why or why not?
